The Costs of Crime: Towards Fiscal Responsibility - Gabrielle M. Maxwell This is a collection of short papers originally presented to a conference, focusing on different aspects of crime and justice in New Zealand: the costs of crime, prisons, rehabilitation, victims’ perspectives, effective approaches to youth justice, legal representation.I found them of variable interest and quality. For example, the chapter with lessons from the UK did not seem to have a firm grasp of the New Zealand government’s fiscal position and attitude (especially jarring given that it is considered in the first two chapters). The chapter looking at the cost of domestic violence in New Zealand seemed to add little to the existing research cited.Of most interest for me were the chapters considering the justice sector from a victim perspective; the analysis of recent changes to criminal procedures legislation in New Zealand; and the final chapter that analysed the place of Māori in New Zealand’s justice and prison system.
